Chapter-8

When Marge and I returned to our cabin I felt so downhearted that all I could do was lie down on my cot and stare silently up at the ceiling, but the ache and the hurt would not go away until finally after Henrietta turned off the lights I managed to doze off to sleep, my mind lost in a grief that brought running tears down my cheeks.

In the morning the early light in the porthole awakened me to a new day. Only Marge was still in the cabin brushing her teeth in the small adjoining bathroom. She must have heard me and called out, “Angie, time to get up, love.”

“Yes, right, Marge,” I responded, “I’m getting up now.”

She came out smiling hopefully, but I could see the look on her face was one of a deep sorrow and that she could not help me in any way but be my friend and try to do all she could to support and help get me through this ordeal of a lost love. “You all right, kid?” she asked, softly.

I was out of my cot and heading for the shower. “He won’t listen to me and I suppose no one else either so what else can I do but get myself up and try not to let it get me down.” I gave her a half-hearted smile, but I knew deep down that it wasn’t going to fool anyone, and we both knew it.

“Well, love, one good thing,” Marge replied. “The Prime Minister is busy with Roosevelt so he hasn’t been asking for reports or any dictations, so we’ve got a little bit of a break, but I shouldn’t count on it for too long.”

“No, I should think you are right,” I agreed. “Where are the girls?”

“Well now, believe it or not, Henrietta has a beau, a young naval officer just arrived a month ago on the ship and get this he’s from the North End just like her, would you believe that?”

I couldn’t help but smile quietly. “How did this come about?”

“Last night,” Marge answered, “She and Jane were invited to a little party in the third officer’s quarters, and they got to talking, and well, one thing led to another and now our lovely little Henrietta has got herself a boyfriend, now isn’t that nice?”

“Yes, I do think that’s lovely.”

“Come on, Angie, get yourself together and we’ll go and have us some breakfast, then we can take a nice stroll up on deck, it’s quite lovely outside and later this morning I heard the Americans are having some more services on board the Augusta, but we’re not invited to that one, only the top brass, but we might be able to watch it from the quarter deck.”

I finished dressing putting on the bulky navy uniform and we made our way down to the junior officer mess. We ate hot cakes with sausages and washed it down with delicious tea. Just as we finished and relaxed a little over our second cup of tea Sub-Lieutenant Gilbert came strolling in and came right to our table.
